iOS: photo picker freezes 20+ seconds after tapping Add when selecting videos (file input)

Our iOS app uses a standard file input for photo and video uploads: .
When a user selects several videos from their photo library and taps Add, the iOS photo picker stays on screen for 20 seconds or more with no feedback, then closes and the files arrive in the web view. From what we can tell, WebKit converts each video to H.264 before handing the files over, and our web code gets nothing until that has finished. So we can't show a spinner or any progress. Users think the app has frozen and some give up.
Questions:
- Is there an app setting in Median that changes how the iOS web view handles videos picked through a file input (for example, passing the original file through without converting it)?
- Does Median have a native media picker available through the JavaScript bridge that closes as soon as the user taps Add and then passes the selected files (or their progress) to the web view?
- If neither exists, what would you recommend? Is a custom native plugin the only route?
Photos are fine; it's only videos, and it gets worse the more videos are selected. Tested on a current iPhone with iOS up to date.
