How to record audio

I have tried a number of ways to record audio but the app always shows the mic is blocked. When I open my phone's app settings, there is no mic permission to enable.

Is there some documentation somewhere that shows the exact steps necessary to allow the app to record audio? I found background audio, but this is active foreground recording, like someone is leaving a voice memo. I can't seem to get the OS to prompt me for audio.

This is on Android, btw.
