Embedded Vimeo HTML Videos Fail to Play on Android

We have a Webview app where the content is displayed via a network of wordpress sites. When I'm on iOS, I can go to these sites and the videos served via Vimeo HTML embeds play fine. On Android, they do not work, it just keeps trying to load, and then when it eventually fails, it gives a generic error message (from within the video player). If I open one of the app pages in Chrome on desktop, the videos also play fine. They also work in other browsers. I downloaded Android Studio and when I emulate the build in that app, the videos play fine. However, in the live production app, on Android only, the Vimeo HTML video embeds fail to actually play. At one point in the past, they worked fine. But about 1 week ago we started to get reports of the videos failing to play.

Is there a known workaround for this issue?
